The Marondera Dombotombo Flats housing project is approaching completion. This was confirmed by the Special Adviser to the President responsible for Monitoring the Implementation of Government Programmes, Honourable Joram Gumbo, during a recent site visit.
Honourable Gumbo explained that the project represents one of the key milestones of the Second Republic in providing accommodation for government employees. The development is set to alleviate the accommodation challenges faced by civil servants in the province. He expressed pride in witnessing the near completion of the project, describing it as a critical component of the government’s strategy to reduce the housing deficit.
He praised the efforts of all stakeholders involved, noting the exceptional progress made towards meeting the national housing delivery targets across the country. “What we see here is not mere brick and mortar but a collaboration of stakeholders united in transforming Vision 2030 into reality,” he said. The provision of these housing units also aligns with the Zimbabwe National Human Settlements Policy, particularly regarding accommodation for civil servants, he said.
Engineer Kudzanayi Chinyanga, Permanent Secretary for National Housing and Social Amenities, explained that the project falls under the Government Pool Property framework and is intended to benefit government employees, helping to ease accommodation challenges within the province. He further revealed that the project is 96% complete.
Kudzai Rimai, Chief Director of Estates Management and Maintenance, highlighted that the project contributes towards Vision 2030’s goal of delivering one million housing units by 2025. “These units, along with many other projects, form part of the government’s contribution to this target, which will be achieved through efforts by both government and the private sector,” she said.
She added that the high-rise buildings adhere to the densification approach, ensuring sustainable development that makes efficient use of land while addressing housing needs. She informed the gathering that only minor works remain across the blocks, primarily consisting of floor and wall finishes, electrical installations, paving, and plumbing. She indicated that if funds are made available, the project could be completed within a month.
Chief Svosve remarked that the project is a tangible result of the realization of Vision 2030. “This is a home for government employees, and we are pleased to see such initiatives. We applaud the President for these projects,” he said.
The project has also created employment opportunities for 140 men and 47 women. The 64 units comprise two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a lounge for each unit.
